Six Things You May Learn As Part Of BLS Classes

Posted on: 27 September 2021

Going through BLS training classes is important for ensuring that you know how to handle emergency situations. You'll be better equipped to protect the lives of those around you in emergency situations if you have gone through this type of training.

The following are six things you may learn as part of BLS classes

How to survey the area around an emergency scene for safety hazards

One of the first things that an individual with BLS training is taught to do in an emergency is to quickly survey the area to make sure that there are no immediate risks of further injury.

Emergency injury situations are often caused by an incident, such as a vehicle crash or a fall. This could mean that there are dangers in the area, such as cars passing by at high speeds.

It's important to make sure that both you and the injured individual aren't in an area of immediate peril when emergency treatment begins.

How to provide choking relief

Choking relief training is typically a part of BLS classes. This will involve learning how to identify symptoms of choking as the result of both a mild and severe obstruction in the throat. Students are also taught how to perform abdominal thrusts to help dispel an obstruction from a patient's airways.

How to administer CPR

One of the most important parts of BLS classes is learning how to perform CPR. Students will need to learn how to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions in an effort to reanimate a patient who has lost consciousness.

How to use AED equipment

Having an AED (automated external defibrillator) device handy in the event of an emergency can be life-saving. These devices are used to get a patient's heart beating again after cardiac arrest has occurred. Learning to use these devices is part of a BLS certification course.

How to perform first aid

First aid training is important for learning how to treat wounds in an emergency situation. First aid training is often included as part of a BLS course. If you are undergoing BLS training, it's a good idea to look for a training course that will include a first aid training component.

How to work with others in an emergency situation

BLS courses typically include learning to administer CPR and first aid treatment both independently and in a team environment. Learning how to work together in the event of an emergency increases your chances of succeeding at savings lives.
